“HITCH-HIKING” AROUND THE WORLD
AUCKLAND MEN ARRIVE IN INVERCARGILL After a journey of about 3000 miles, a considerable part of which was covered on foot, two young, men from Auckland, Mr R. H. H. Ford and Mr J. H. Vernon, who set off from Whangarei about 16 weeks ago with the intention of “hitch-hiking” around the world, arrived in Invercargill yesterday. The walkers, who carry a letter of recommendation from the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), stated that they were pleased to reach Invercargill, which was the end of their journey in New Zealand. Persons with whom they had come in contact had been very kind to them. “We are eagerly looking forward to leaving on the next stage of our journey.” remarked one of the pair. “We intend to give talks on New Zealand abroad and have with us 500 feet of movie film of the Lakes district. The tour of the world, we think, will take from 10 to 12 years and we hope, on our return, to put our experiences into book form.” The pair will leave for Melbourne by the Maunganui on October 28.
