In Town And Out

Parking Area In Crescent A new parking area for motor-cars has been provided in the Crescent and bright yellow lines were painted in the middle of the street yesterday. Apparently motorists are not yet accustomed to central parking, for a solitary car was observed parked in the new area.

Trafalgar Day Today is Trafalgar Day, the one hundred and thirty-second anniversary of the British naval victory at Trafalgar, in which Lord Nelson’s fleet of 27 shins defeated a combined FrancoSpanish force of 33 ships. Twenty-one of the enemy ships were taken or destroyed without the loss of one British vessel.

Banana Sales Steady Sales of bananas have been steady during the last month, and although a record quantity has reached the market supplies on hand are not plentiful and may be exhausted soon after next week-end. Ripe fruit from the next shipment will not be available until the beginning of the following week and the market will probably be bare for a few days.

Prospect of Orange Shortage The supplies of South Australian oranges will shortly come to an end and no announcement has yet been made whether the embargo on shipments from New South Wales and other prohibited districts will be lifted by the Government. It is estimated that the market will be bare at the beginning of next month, and no supplies from other countries are expected for a month after that. Eggs Scarcer

Supplies of eggs in Southland have been scarcer during the last week or two and prices are showing a rising tendency. Retail quotations yesterday varied and were as high as 1/5 a dozen, compared with the lowest price of 1/1 a dozen ruling a few weeks ago. It is stated that the demand for preserving has been keen during the past week, and this probably accounts for the shorter supplies.

Demonstrating Models Four little boats', each a few inches long, occupied an important place in the hearing of the evidence in the marine inquiry yesterday into the sinking of the trawler Black Cat in Foveaux Strait. Witnesses used these models to demonstrate the respective positions of the boats concerned —the Black Cat, the Rita and the Waitangi—and on one occasion counsels’ table was cleared to represent the sea, a witness manoeuvred the boats, .and the magistrate and the two assessors leaned over from the bench with absorbed interest. Central Otago Fruit Frosted Reports received by Invercargill merchants from Central Otago fruit growers state that considerable losses have been suffered in the Roxburgh and Alexandra districts through the frosting of apricots. Frosts have continued steadily during recent weeks and although it is expected that crops will be reaped from trees in most districts the supplies of fruit may not be so great as usual. It is possible that the frosts will have a thinning effect, resulting in better quality fruit, but the output will probably be lower than expected. Totalizator Sought A petition urging Parliament to inquire whether it would be in the best interests of the people if totalizator facilities were allowed at whippet race meetings is being circulated for signature in Southland. The petitioners are the president and other members of the National Whippet Racing Association of New Zealand.' They state that the sport has flourished and established itself firmly in New Zealand and feel that the time is opportune for the carrying out of certain improvements with a view to still further encouraging the sport. They mention facilities granted similar associations in Britain, South Africa and Australia.
