Sir William Hunt and Lady Hunt arrive from Wellington today to stay with Mrs W. E. Hunt, Waitoru, Wallacetown. Mrs A. Gilchrist, Mrs T. Spence and Miss R. Little, Wrights Bush, and Miss J. Shepherd, Invercargill, have returned from a visit to Cascade Creek and the Hollyford Valley. The engagement is announced of Margaret Patricia, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Le H. Hoyles, Herbert street, to David Allan, second son of Mr and Mrs David Highet, Hataitai, Wellington. Mrs G. M. Chapman. Liddel street, superintendent of the Invercargill Division of the St. John Ambulance, left yesterday for Christchurch to attend the ambulance competitions during Labour Day week-end. Mr Carl Crow, in a book about travel in China, tells of the interesting origin of chop-suey. He reveals that this dish is far from being one of the national foods of China. In fact, chopsuey is a slang term in Canton, and means “beggar’s hash.” It describes the contents of a beggar’s plate after he has collected fragments from many houses. During the gold-rush days of California, however, several miners visited a San Francisco restaurant and asked for something to eat. Supplies were scarce, so the proprietor secretly collected all the scraps left on the plates of the previous customers, and these he served to the miners with a Chinese sauce. The men enjoyed the dish, and demanded to know its name, so that they could order it again next time. “It is chop-suey,” answered the proprietor quite honestly.

The Maharanee of Indore, Europeanized, exotically beautiful wife of one of the world’s richest men, died in the Alpine hotel of Samaden, near St. Moritz, two months ago, states an exchange. The tiny Maharanee, who married at the age of eleven the six-teen-year-old son and heir of one of the world’s richest men, had the world’s most famous complexion. She died at the age of 25, still at the height of her beauty. She was the daughter of one of the Ministers of her father-in-law’s Court and had been married to Prince Rao Holkar, heir to the throne of Indore, for less than three years, when the Maharaja was forced to abdicate after the Mumtaz Begum scandal. Mumtaz Begum, dancing girl at the Court with whom Maharaja Tukoji Rao had fallen in love, was abducted and a Bombay merchant, Mr Bawla, was found dead.
