RHEIMS CATHEDRAL REOPENED

FIRST SERVICE FOR 23 YEARS RHEIMS, October 18. After 23 years’ interruption because of damage by the Germans during the war, Rheims Cathedral is now completely restored, and was reopened for public worship with a seven-hour ceremony. Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Rheims, who was the celebrant, explained that despite having existed since the 15th century—2s French kings had been crowned there—the cathedral had never been consecrated and the ceremony which was overlooked in ancient times was being arranged when the war broke out. Altogether 287 shells directly hit the cathedral, the first being on September 4, 1914, and the last on September 17, 1918.
