BOYS’ BRIGADE

DOMINION COUNCIL MEETING

(By

HAVERSACK)

The sixth annual meeting of the Dominion council will be held in Christchurch during Labour Day week-end, October 23, 24 and 25, inclusive. The central position which Christchurch occupies geographically should result in a record attendance this year. ' The Southland Battalion will be represented by Messrs W. R. Selwyn, J. H. Boyd, E. J. Boyd, F. H. Lambeth and L. D. MacVicker. They will motor through and expect to arrive in Christchurch by nine o’clock on Friday evening. Advice from Otago says that eight Otago officers will be attending. The original general arrangements are as follows:—

Saturday, October 23.—10 a.m., meeting of retiring Dominion Life Boy Committee (chairman, W. R. Selwyn); 10 a.m., meeting of retiring Dominion executive (chairman, Mr F. Scott Miller); 1.30 p.m., lunch together; 2.30 p.m., scenic tour with afternoon tea en route at 4.30 p.m.; 7.26 p.m., meet remaining delegates arriving from the south at Christchurch railway station; 8 p.m., hot supper together; 8.30 p.m. social hour, sing-song, and informal discussions.

Sunday, October 24.—10.30 officers parade with Christchurch companies to Divine service. The service will be followed by Communion for officers, or alternately Communion will be held after the round-table discussion Sunday evening; afternoon will be free; 7 p.m., round-table discussion, “The Benefits of the Voluntary Class System,” speaker, Mr Roland H. Hill (captain 2nd Wellington Company); 9.30, supper. Monday, October 25.—9.30 a.m., sixth annual meeting of Dominion Council; 12.30 p.m., lunch; 1.30 p.m., meeting of 1938 Dominion Executive; 4.00 p.m., meeting of 1938 Life Boy Committee; 5.30 p.m., tea; break-up. Even although some lieutenants may not have voting power they are entitled to attend the annual meeting and to take part in discussions.

There is a possibility, of an amendment to the itinerary to’ provide for the late arrival of some of the Otago delegates. The meeting of the retiring executive and life boy committee which was scheduled for Saturday morning will probably be postponed until Sunday afternoon. Late arrivals will meet the main party at the Takahe tea rooms, Cashmere Hills, on Saturday afternoon, at 4 p.m.

The battalion church parade will be held on Sunday afternoon, October 31, at First Church. Mr L. D. MacVicker has been appointed commanding officer for the parade. Particulars will be given next week. Sunday, October 31, will be kept as Founder’s Day by 8.8. companies everywhere. We doubt if there is any organization in the land which owes more to its founder than The Boys’ Brigade. It is 23 years since the passing of Sir William Smith—23 years of change and development within the brigade and turmoil and tribulation outside, a period which leaves the 8.8. fundamentally as it was when the founder passed on his life’s work to other hands. No company truly imbued with the 8.8. spirit can let Founder’s Day pass unnoticed. On that day every officer and boy on his knees should thank God for the life and work of the man whose spirit still rules the brigade. On Saturday evening, October 16, three life boys from the 2nd Invercargill (Stobo Hall) team were transferred to the 2nd Invercargill Company of The Boys’ Brigade. Mr W. R. Selwyn, supervisor of life boys, performed the ceremony. After having shaken hands with their leader and given their last life boy salute to her, the boys were presented to the captain of the company, giving him their first Boys’ Brigade salute. Mr Boyd and Mr Cameron both welcomed the boys, and after having exchanged their life boy hats for boys’ brigade hats they formed into the ranks of the company. Their team mates wish them every success in The Boys’ Brigade. The glorious hot days of summer are not very far away, and the thoughts of all boys, who are lucky enough to be in the 8.8., turn to the prospect of that camp where they mean to spend their holidays this year. In your own company, the officers and N.C.O.s will be

talking about the camp and reminding you to continue paying in to camp fund, so that you can make sure of being with the rest when they march away. Be sure that your squad is complete when the great day comes. If by any chance you have not heard when and where your company is camping, ask your captain what’s the matter. In the report of the battalion competitions last week it was stated that Private C. Cochrane was third in the prepared speech. He was second with 76 points, Corporal N. Gerrard being third with 70 points. The 7th Invercargill Life Boy team will hold an enrolment service at North Invercargill Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, October 31. The 8.8. company will form a guard of honour and will also attend the service.
