Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times)

JUNE 18, 1887 Colonial Bank. —Mr W. Young having retired from the service, Mr W. B. Vigers has been appointed manager of the Colonial Bank in Invercargill, pro tern. The North Ward.—We are authorized to say that Mr Charles Freeman will be a candidate for the representation of the North Ward in the Borough Council at the approaching election. Dipton.— Timber is arriving for the new school house at Riverside. This is satisfactory, as the present building is now far too small. The little ones are making rapid progress, which reflects to the teacher’s credit. This project has been an immense success.

Artistic Work in Suet.— Anyone who likes to take a stroll in Dee street this morning will have an opportunity of seeing some of the most artistic work in butchers’ small goods that has ever been exhibited here. Mr Steel, who has charge of this department at Organ and Co.’s, has been at it late and early for some time, and believes that on this occasion he has eclipsed all his former efforts. The principal decorations are a clock tower, with a clock going in it, a representation of a battery under attack by cavalry, and a field with a racehorse as the principal figure.
