BOXING

RULES CHANGED FOR TITLE BOUT (Received June 17, 6.30 p.m.) CHICAGO, June 16. The State Boxing Commission adopted a radical change in the so-called 10-second rule for the world’s heavyweight championship fight between J. J. Braddock (holder) and Joe Louis (challenger). A fighter formerly, whether floored inside or outside the ring, had 10 seconds in which to regain a fighting posture, but under the change he will have 20 seconds to regain a fighting posture unassisted, within the ring. Should he be knocked or fall out of the ring, other changes to rules have been made to prevent the famous “long count” which marred the DempseyTunney fight in 1927. A special ring will also be used, measuring 22ft square within the ropes. Braddock and Louis did not train today. MUDGWAY BEATS PARKS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 17. Before 2000 spectators in the Town Hall tonight Nevill Mudgway (Auckland) outpointed _ “Tiger” Parks, an American negro, in a 10-round professional boxing contest. Parks led for the first four rounds, but from then on Mudgway paid attention to the body and wore his man down. It was a bout marked by boxing as distinguished from fighting. In a second 10-round professional contest Henry Dunn (9st 61b) outpointed S. Smith (9st 121 b). Smith did all the leading, but Dunn’s science won him the casting vote of the referee.
