CITY COUNCIL TO BE REPRESENTED
MEETING OF LISTENERS Although by its representation it will in no way be committed to anything done at the meeting, the City Council decided last evening to send two delegates to a meeting of radio listeners in Southland called with a view to forming a Southland listeners’ league or society. Crs E. J. McLauchlan and J. H. Tattersfield were appointed to represent the council. The matter came before the council when the following letter, from Messrs H. J. Farrant and A. W. Jones, was read: , , “The Southland Radio Club has now disbanded and at a recent meeting it was resolved that steps be taken to form a Southland Listeners’ League or society with a view to furthering the activities of broadcasting in Southland. The opinion was generally expressed that the time for a more modern station with studio had arrived. With this end in view, as requested, we are convening a meeting to be held in Everybody’s Hall on Monday evening, June 21 at 8 p.m. ' We respectfully request that you send representatives to that meeting as it is desired to make it as representative as possible.” Tfie Mayor (Mr John Miller) said he thought it most unusual for the council to be asked to be interested in such a matter. “I am surprised at your remarks, your Worship,” said Cr A. W. Jones. “I say this is a matter in which we should interest ourselves.” The Mayor: There is at present a B station in Invercargill, and this is a meeting of people to see if they can formulate some other means of dealing with the radio situation in Southland. Cr Jones said that the meeting would present an opportunity to get something done for the thousands of listeners in Southland, and he thought that the council should be represented, and thus lead the way in such matters. He moved that the council appoint representatives. Cr J. H. Tattersfield seconded the motion and said that they should get what they were entitled to in the way of good broadcasting and programmes. Something up to date was required. Southland listeners were only asking for what was their due. Indeed, that was long overdue. They certainly were not getting what they were entitled to receive. Cr G. E. T. Dorman said he hoped the council would not be committed in any way if it was represented at the meeting. Cr Jones: No, there is no suggestion of that.
