LABOUR LEGISLATION DENOUNCED
“ECONOMIC COLLAPSE AND REGIMENTATION” (Received June 15, 8.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 14, Mrs Leila Blomfield, a former New Zealander who is a member of the New York State Economic Council, giving evidence before a congressional committee which is reporting on the Administration’s wage and hour Bill, compared the measure with New Zealand’s social legislation, which she said had resulted in regimentation and economic collapse. Mrs Blomfield assured the committee that lower wages and longer hours provided the way for increasing purchasing power. “To depend on high wages and short hours for prosperity is simply economic chloroform and economic suicide,” she declared. A member of the House of Representatives (Mr Black) countered with figures purporting to show that New Zealand’s legislation had greatly benefited the Dominion.
