AN INCREASED RATE LEVY

PROVISION IN COUNCIL’S ESTIMATES The estimates for the new financial year provide for an increase of 17 J 4 per cent, in the rate levy, according to a preliminary statement made by the Mayor (Mr John Miller) at the meeting of die City Council last evening. _ The Mayor said that the estimates provided for a rate levy of £88,175, compared with last year’s levy of £75,272, an increase of 17.14 per cent. Included in the amount was provision for the hospital levy this year of £7442, compared with £5624 last year. Provision had also been made, he said, to meet the increased labour cost throughout the service, the result of the new legislation and awards, including the added cost for the proportion of the current year of the agreement just completed with the labourers’ union—£llooo.
