BOUT BETWEEN FARR AND NEUSEL
HITCH OVER PURSE There seems to be a slight hitch in the scheduled bout between Tommy Farr and Walter Neusel. Tommy thinks his purse of £3250 is not enough—he wants £5OOO. The fight is fixed for June 15, writes F. L. Mcllwraith, London representative of The Sydney Referee. Farr apparently makes the case that if Maxie Baer can come here and take £6OOO from the fight public, then he, Tommy Farr, should at least get as much as the man whom he beat. Sydney Hulls, the promoter of the match, said that the contracts have already been signed, and the terms agreed upon, by both Farr and his manager, Ted Broadribb. Jack Dempsey made some remarks this week about boxing in America. Some of them have a local application. He said: — “Boxing isn’t boxing any more. It’s just a big lawsuit. If something isn’t done within a year we just won’t have any boxing. In the past five years it has deteriorated so much that all the other sports have gone ahead. The fight game needs somebody who can i supervise the washing of boxing’s 1 dirty linen in its own backyard. If I contracts and promises are no good, what good is boxing?” Very pungent remarks, these. Then he goes bn to suggest a clearing house for all recognized fighters, where they could be rated so that promoters would know each one’s capabilities, with the whole thing subject to the regulation of the Federal Government.
