At present Europe is short I of grain vessels, and is anxious to obtain e cargoes at the high rates offering. Eight ? steamers and motor-ships and six sailing ships are now loading grain in Australian 5 ports, and 40 vessels, including an obi- solete three-masted barque, are racing to Australia to fulfil wheat charters which a total more than 314,000 tons. Modern >• “economy” tramps, which were launched from British shipyards recently, are bound * for Australia in ballast to load their first e cargoes, while scarred and rusty tramp y steamers, flying the ensigns of Britain, Norway, Japan, Finland, Sweden, and China, / are heading for the Australian grain ports at the best speed possible with old ree ciprocating engines and battered Diesels, r The movements of these itinerant sea vagabonds, which are being attracted to il Australia from many points of the- com- ■; pass, will be watched by hundreds of school s children throughout the British Empire, d for practically every vessel in the grain fleet, which flies the British flag has been “adopted” by schools to improve the children’s geographical knowledge.
