BOWLS

The Easter Pairs Tournament WIN FOR STEVENS AND MORRISON The Easter bowling pairs competition, conducted by the Southland and Te Rangi clubs, was held on Saturday in ideal weather. Both the Southland and Te Rangi greens were occupied for the tournament and the entries included pairs from several of the country clubs. The competition was played in sections, and the semi-finals and finals were decided on the Te Rangi green. G. T. Stevens and R. G. Morrison (Waihopai) met F. Holloway and M.- McKenzie (Te Rangi) in the final, which the first-named pair won by 15 points to 6. A high standard of bowling was maintained throughout the day and there was a number of close finishes. The condition of both greens was excellent; the fine weather of the last week had done much to ensure a keen running surface. Mr R. L. Dunwoodie, president of the Te Rangi Club, presented the trophies and congratulated the winners. He thanked the players for their support of the tournament which, he considered, had been an outstanding success. He thanked the women for their work during the day and the green umpires and supervisors for their work and care of the greens. Mr P. J. Israel, president of the Southland Bowling Club, also spoke. Morrison was in top form with his driving and saved several times by burning the head. The leading of Stevens was consistently good all day. He also played many good running shots which, rarely failed to turn the position in his favour.

RINKS TOURNEY AT OTAUTAU

WIN FOR RIVERTON Excellent weather prevailed for' the rinks tournament at Otautau, and the green was in good running order. The entries were a record for the club, sixteen rinks being accommodated on the Otautau green and twelve on the Riverton green. The president, Mr H, W. D. Gazzard, took the opportunity of welcoming visiting bowlers and thanked them for their patronage. In the section ties two Riverton rinks (skipped by P. J. Eccleton and S. Hall) and two Otautau rinks, with G. Sinclair and J. Scatter as skips, took part. The final was fought out by P. J. Eccleton (Riverton) and G. Sinclair (Otautau), when an interesting game, played under artificial light, was seen by a large attendance of spectators. Riverton had the best of the first half of the board, but on the change over Otautau evened up the score until it stood at 18—14 in favour of the Riverton men at the 20th head. On a long head Otautau had the necessary number to tie but Eccleton with his last bowl cut one out arid won hy one point, the final figures registering 18—17 in his favour. In presenting the trophies Mr H. W. D. Gazzard said that Riverton thoroughly deserved the win. The seaside club, and the winning skip had assisted Otautau right royally in running the tournament, and the thanks of the members were due to them. The entries had eclipsed all previous records, and it was pleasing to see two Western District teams fight out the final. He congratulated the Riverton team on its success, and trusted it would be the forerunner of many others. In reply Mr Eccleton thanked the president for his remarks, and paid a tribute to Mr G. Scatter for acting as official umpire at Riverton. He said that the townspeople had passed some very complimentary remarks on the running surface of the seaside green, and he congratulated the local club on the excellent state of the Otautau green. DUNEDIN TOURNEY BLUFF RINK AND PAIR SURVIVE NORTHEND PAIR ALSO LEFT IN (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, March 27. One rink and two pairs from Southland clubs remain in the events to be decided on Monday and Tuesday at the Dunedin Bowling Centre’s Easter tournament. N. W. McGorlick’s Bluff rink was the only one of seven Southland rinks to survive section play, and in the pairs McGorlick and S. C. K. Smith (Northend) remain. J. Coughlan (R.S.A.), is leading for McGorlick in the pairs and the rinks, and C.‘ J. McEeachran is leading for Smith. Glorious weather prevailed for rinks day on Good Friday. McGorlick played off for the section with E. Longworth (St. Kilda) and won by 11 points to 3, and he now meets J. A. Veitch’s West Harbour rink in the first game of post-section play. Should the Bluff rink defeat West Harbour it may play a prominent part in the decision of the event. Fifteen rinks are left in. A. V. Keast’s Northend rink tied for the section on Kaituna green with three wins and a loss, but in the play off the Southlanders went under to C. H. McKay’s Caversham rink by 11 points to 5. The Northend team met a strong rink from the Dunedin club skipped by E. Harraway and gained a decisive win by 16 points to 9. This game was the highlight of the afternoon’s play at Kaituna. Northend had to defeat Dunedin to bring three others into the section tie and this created the extra interest. Harraway was unbeaten and a win against Keast would have meant his winning the section straight out. In Harraway’s rink there were A. E. Harraway, R. Fountain, J. C. Rigby and E. Harraway, all prominent players. On their form in this game the Northerners were favourites for the section, but in their game with McKay (a 40-minute game) they failed to settle down and McKay won fairly comfortably. C. Parry (Bluff) tied in his section, but failed in the play-off. A surprise result was the loss of all four games by R. R. Hunter’s reputedly strong Invercargill rink. Following are the results of games played by the Southland rinks: N. W. McGorlick (Bluff) defeated S. Hutchinson (Logan Park) 15—13, J. Mooney (Anderson’s Bay) 16—10, R. Hungerford (Caledonian) 17—14 and lost to E. Longworth (St. Kilda), 21—5. In the section tie McGorlick beat Longworth. D. K. Torrance (Southland) beat G. Kitchin (Leith), 16—13, K. Morrison (Dunedin) 19 —9, and lost to D. Stevenson (Taieri) 18—16 and G. Finlayson (Balmacewan) 15 —14. W. P. Thorn (Mataura) lost to H. Winter (Green Island) 24—10, E. Davis (Balmacewan) 15—14 and S. Devereaux (Kaikorai) 17—11 and tied with J. Lock (Caversham) 13—13. A. V. Keast (Northend) defeated J. Thomson (Taieri) 17—5, G. Swift (Caledonian) 21—9 and E. Harraway (Dunedin) 16—9 and lost to J. Barron (Benhar) 17—5. In the section tie Keast was defeated by McKay (Caversham). S. C. K. Smith (Northend) defeated S. Smith (Brighton) 21—5, and H. Gardiner (Dunedin) 18—10 and lost to Todd (Caversham) 18 —16 and J. Nisbet (Balmacewan) 14—10. C. Parry (Bluff) defeated Robertson (Anderson’s Bay) 16—13, A. G. Spiers (St Kilda) 19—12 and T. Isaac (Caledonian) 18—10, and lost to Thomson (Logan Park) 19—12. In the section tie Parry was defeated by Robertson by 10 to 6. R. R. Hunter (Invercargill) lost to Walker (Otago) 19—8, T. Ashton (Anderson’s Bay) 20—14, A. McDonald (Balmacewan) 16—10 and A. Gibson (Dunedin) 17—14. McGorlick (Bluff) and Smith (Northend) won their sections in the pairs, and are the only competitors out of 16 Southland pairs to qualify. Keast and J. Ure (Northend) won their first tliree games and qualified for the section, but were defeated in the play-off by N. Reardon and A. G. Spiers (St. Kilda). W. McKitterick and D. Scandrett (Northend) failed to’ win a game.
