Otautau
BASKETBALL The Otautau Basketball team travelled to Fairfax to meet the A team. Fairfax was vastly superior in all deuartments and secured a win by 13 goals to 1. Mrs Joll was referee. PRESENTATION Prior to his removal for Palmerston South Mr Jamieson of the Post and Telegraph Department was met by a few friends. In asking him to accept a pipe as a token of appreciation and good will Mr G. H. Hodges wished him every success in his new sphere. The recipient suitably replied. GARDEN CLUB There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Otautau Garden Club, when “Question night” proved very interesting. The best bloom competition resulted as follows: Mrs McFadgen 1, Mrs.F. C. Chilton 2, Mrs Liddell 3. It was decided to ask Mr Martin, Ohai, to give an address at the June meeting, and arrangements were also made for an evening on “Native I Shrubs” at a later date. A vote of thanks was carried by the I ladies to the male members for supper. SOLDIERS’ REUNION The annual reunion held under the auspices of the Otautau branch of the I R.S.A., in the Town Hall was voted to be one of the most successful functions yet held. Close on 100 ex-soldiers were present. The following associations were represented: Invercargill, Gore, Orepuki, Drummond, Ohai, Tuataperd, Riverton and Winton. Mr A. R. Simon officiated as toastmaster and carried out his duties in a creditable manner. After the toast of the “King” had been honoured, and the “Stand to” and roll call, the chairman, Mr A. Fisher, took the opportunity of welcoming the guests. The toast of “Fallen Comrades” was honoured in silence. The remaining toasts were: “Army, Navy and Air Force,” responded to by Mr C. A. Caigou (Winton); “The Anzacs” (Mr W. Fraser), “The South African Veterans” (Messrs Shaw and A. Evans), “Women War Workers,” (Mr G. Williams), “Our Guests” (representatives of sub-associations present), and “The Chairman” (Mr A. Fisher). In responding to the toast of the N.Z. R.S.A., Mr Hugh Crawford, the Invercargill R.S.A. representative, said he was pleased to see that the local branch had a membership of 101, which was easily the largest of the sub-branches. Items were given by the Diggers’ Quartette, Messrs A. S. McCrostie, H. Hogg, S. Hale, Alex Coulter, Richards and A. F. Henderson, while community singing and reminiscences were also indulged in.
