LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

The monthly meeting of the Lumsden Town Board was held on Monday when the following commissioners were present: A. Heath (chair), T. Small, T. McDonald, C. Moloney, W. Johnson, W. Dripps. Several residents in South Lumsden forwarded a request for a light to be erected at the corner of Avon and Diana streets. The request was granted and it vas also decided that no further applications for street lights be considered this year. The Public Works engineer forwarded an estimate of the cost of the protective works. To erect a permanent groin would cost in the vicinity of £l7OO. It was proposed that a flood bank Bft high be erected immediately and the cost would be £720. If this were erected the work of the groins could be completed later. The depart- , ment wished to know the amount of , assistance that the Town Board would i be prepared to give. I It was decided to vote the sum of . £l5O towards the work, providing the department would be prepared to ac- , cept the amount in instalments spread ! over two years. The bank would ex- ' tend from the present groin to the ■ railway and would prevent flood-water reaching the course towards the township. Commissioners expressed satisfaction at the report and it is expected that work will be commenced with little delay. L. E. Barnett, chairman of the Otago and Southland Division of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, wrote asking the board for a donation to the King’s Jubilee Fund. Members were of the opinion that such a worthy cause should be supported and a donation of £5 was made. The question of wandering stock was brought up, and it was decided to appoint the clerk as ranger, the Town Board’s section in Hero street to be Used for impounding wandering stock. It was decided to improve the corner at the junction of Pluto road and Diana street in view of the increased traffic on the new road. The Works Committee reported that the crossing at the corner of Meadow and Forests streets was in a dangerous condition owing to bank erosion. It was recommended that the dangerous area be fenced.
