GREATER BUILDING
CITY FIGURES FOR YEAR. The improvement in building activity in the city is shown by the following table contained in the city engineer’s annual report:— 1930-31 1931-32 1932-33 1933-34 1934-35 Total No. of permits issued — 287 475(a) 594(b) 690(C) 622(d) Value of work constructed—£ll2,69s £45,445 £66,486 £113,524 £141.387 Fees collected—£493 £217 £287 £514 £583 Out of this year’s total of £141,387, £97,768 is for new dwellings, which numbered 120 (last year 102), 115 being of brick veneer or similar, and 5 of timber. The average cost of dwellings erected has been as follows:— Year Average cost
It is interesting to, notice that these costs are from £ll6 (in 1933-34) to £2OO (in 1927-28 and 1931-32) higher than in Christchurch. The reason is that the average dwelling here is probably larger, being of about 6 rooms, and that brick veneer construction is so common, with little timber or other cheap construction.
