The South African bowlers opened sensationally, taking the first wicket with the first ball and then three more wickets in half an hour for 11 runs. The visitors batted quietly until 48 had been registered, when Nourse and Viljoen went out in the same over. The former New Zealand wicketkeeper, K. James, played for the first time for Northants.
