Thirty more editors, making fifty, have been dismissed for publishing without appending an official explanation a recent declaration by Dr Bertram, Archbishop of Breslau, pleading on behalf of monks and nuns imprisoned for breaches of the currency 1& Dr Bertram, replying to attacks by the Nazi Press, says he did not intend to criticize the verdicts, but sought clemency. The Church also condemns crime against the State and the people, and would, after the conclusion of criminal proceedings, deal with those concerned according to canonical law.

A Catholic nun, Sister Wamera, secretary of the Order of St. Vincent, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and fined £12,000. or. in default, a further 14 months for smuggling currency from Germany. The Court also confiscated £20,000 from the Order. Sister Wamera admitted smuggling the money to Holland in clothing in order to buv orders and bonds as the money was required to extend the hospital at Cologne. The prosecution declared that the trial was not political and was not directed against Catholicism, but was merely criminal.
