DUKE OF MANCHESTER
"* CONVICTION QUASHED.
(United Press Assn— Telegraph Copyright.) London, June 5. The Appeal Court quashed the conviction against the Duke of Manchester, chiefly on the ground that the Recorder of London, had insufficiently and unsatisfactorily directed the jury on the point of the Duke’s belief in his counsels opinion that he had a right to deal with the jewellery. The Duke of Manchester was released shortly after the decision and went to his castle at Kimbolton, St. Neots.
The Duke of Manchester was sentenced In nine months’ imprisonment on two charges of false pretences. The prosecution alleged that the Duke obtained sums of £4OO and £2OO by pawning jewellery and falsely representing that it belonged to him. The jewellery consisted of heirlooms left by his mother on a trust by which It could he lent to the Duke’s first and second wives. Mr Curtis Bennett for the defence, declared that the executors on March 18 initiated a prosecution, two years after the pawning. §he Duke of Manchester gave evidence emfflFe d» thThe^af bowed 1 MWseEel £ traying no emotion.
