EX-PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING ", ! j ' s , , (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Ex-Pupils’ Association of the Nightcaps Schpol was held in the school. on Monday night Mr D. Sinclair was in the chair and there was a fair attendance of expupils. Complimentary references to ’the splendid work done by Miss K. Cosgriff,' ex-secretary, ,and who had recently left to reside in the north, were made. Mr W. Excell, chairman of the School Committee, thanked the association for the- planting of rose trees in the school ground. Mr Excell commented on the fine show the roses and shrubs were making. It was arranged that further - trees would be planted and also that the association carry out the setting of a stone on Jubilee Hill. Mr Sinclair offered to provide fencing material round the Jubilee stone and was thanked for his offer. A reunion taking the form of a social and dance is to be held at an early date. The following officials were elected to the executive for the ensuing year: President, Mr D. Sinclair (re-elected); executive committee, Messrs John Grant, A. Tinker, A. Prendeville, T. Johnstone, P. Grant, A. V. Berry and Miss M. Welsh; secretary and treasurer, J. D. Sinclair. Basketball. The fixtures in the Western District were continued on Wednesday, Nightcaps A meeting Wairio on the local school courts. Nightcaps proved superior in practically every department of the game and their team work is benefiting from the hard practice the players are putting in. The Nightcaps shoots were very accurate ahd the final scores were: Nightcaps 18, Wairio 10. Mr O. V. Berry controlled the game. Bowling Club’s Euchre. There was a good attendance at the Bowling Club’s euchre on Thursday evening. Mr Excell, president of the club, handed the prizes to the winners who were: Ladies, Mrs J. B. Johnston; men, Mr A. Malcolm. Convent Building Fund. The final night of the euchre and crib tournament for the Nightcaps princess was held on Tuesday evening. Prizes for the final night were won by Mrs W. Kelly, ladies’ crib; Miss M. Brazier, ladies’ euchre; E. Boyle, men’s crib; J. C. Purdue, men’s euchre. The aggregate prizes for 10 night play were won by Mrs Laidlaw crib, and Mrs Colligan, euchre. The hidden number competition was won by C. F. Hunt. The committee in charge of the building fund have decided to conduct a similar tournament to the one just decided and Mr F. Boyle has generously donated a silver cup to the winner of the aggregate. Valedictory. Mr Colin Bulman, who has been counter clerk in the local post office for the past two years and who has been transferred to Waipiata, was tendered a social evening on Wednesday night. The evening was spent in dancing, cards and musical items. Interspersed with the dancing pleasing songs were rendered by * Miss Dyson, Miss Dockerty and Allan McKenzie. Mr B. Rushton, jun., on behalf of the Golf Club and citizens; then made the presentation of a suitcase to' the departing guest. Mr Rushton eulogized the keenness and playing qualities displayed by Mr Bulman as a member of the golf club. Mr Bulman had associated himself with many other sporting activities and as a civil servant had always carried out his duties in a creditable manner both to his department and himself. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by Mr Excell (citizens) and Mr Carmody (Post Office staff). Mr Bulman suitably replied. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held in the school on Tuesday evening. Mr Excell (chairman) presided over a full attendance of committee members. Mr O. V. Berry, headmaster, was also present. Some routine business was dealt with and the headmaster presented the following report whiclijjwas adopted: The school roll now stood at 130 and the attendance for the first week had been 121.7 or 93.6 per cent. On the last day of the last term a very successful function to celebrate the King’s Jubilee had been held. The new basketball court was completed in December. It was hoped that a tournament could be arranged at a date latei in the season. Mr Berry had pleasure in reporting that the Nightcaps School had again been successful in gaining most points for school work at the recent Nightcaps show, .bus winning the cup donated by the Coal Owners’ Association for this section. Personal. Mr and Mrs J. B. McLeod visited Bluff during the week-end. Mr J. Phillips, Stewart Island, has been spending a holiday in Nightcaps. Mr R. Nimmo is spending the ’varsity vacation with his parents in Nightcaps. Mrs '.V. S. Johnston and Miss D. Rushton are visitors to Dunedin for the show and races. Miss E. Thomas visited Invercargill over the week-end. Visitors from this district to Dunedin to the show and races included Messrs S. Purdue, S. McGregor, A. C. Dixon, J. Brazier, jun., F. Boyle, I. Thomson. Mr G. McMillan and family motored to Dunedr. at the week-end. Mr Colin Bulman leaves on Friday to take up his new duties at Waipiata.
