BRIGHT HOCKEY

ALL-INDIA TEAM CROWD DELIGHTED AT CHRISTCHURCH CHAND’S BRILLIANCE (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 3. Hockey of a standard never before seen in Christchurch delighted a crowd of 14,000 this afternoon when the Indian touring team met the Canterbury representatives. The Indian team won by five goals to two. but the quality of their game was immeasurably superior to the play of the home team, however. The Canterbury men by superior speed occasionally penetrated the Indians’ very well organized defence. The smooth team work of the Indians, uncanny stick work and tactics and their greater finesse carried the day against the young, eager Canterbury team. It was not until the last 15 minutes that the Indians placed the issue beyond doubt. Dhyan Chand showed himself deserving of his reputation as the best player in the world and some of his work in combination with Rup Singh and Wells was of dazzling brilliancy. The first goal came from this combination within a few minutes of the opening of play. Canterbury made a smart attack a few minutes later and were very near scoring. Then splendid defence kept Chand and his men out. Rhind, in the Canterbury goal, made many brilliant saves. India’s second goal was scored by Rup Singh. Moir goaled for Canterbury in the second spell. First Wells for India and then Cole for Canterbury scored, making the score India 3, Canterbury 2. Chand added two more goals before time was called.
