CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING.

AMBITIOUS EVENT IN CHRIST-

CHURCH.

Christchurch, June 1, Cross-country runners in Christchurch carried out their most ambitious enterprise in the history of the sport in Canterbury by running a crosscountry , relay race from the Sign of the Takahe on the Dyer’s Pass Road, Cashmere Hills, to Akaroa, a distance of nearly 50 miles. One hundred and twenty runners took part and they raced in teams of eight, the distance being divided into eight stages. Over a hilly course the runners kept a speed of a little better than 10 miles an hour.

The first five teams home were: Christchurch A (4hr. 49min.); Presbyterian A (4hr. 55mm.); Methodist (shr. 2min.); Anglican (shr. 13min.); University A (shr. 13Jmin.).
