GARSTON NOTES

HARVESTING GENERAL. Harvesting is now general and in the majority of cases the crops are lighter than usual, though there are paddocks here and there of barley and oats which are exceptionally good. Rain is badly needed for the turnips, particularly those most recently sown. The earlier’ crops have thrived better than was expected. Pastures are also badly in need of moisture. This season the grass which was threshed, though not of any great area, is of excellent duality. The weather, which has been extremely hot for the past few weeks, is cooler, and a steady rain fell for some time last evening. A good down-pour is needed to make any impression on the baked earth.

Mining operations have been greatly hindered for want of water. Those streams usually to be depended on are completely dried up. Miss V. Soper, second daughter of Mr and Mrs George Soper, Athol, was married, on Thursday to Mr T. Adams, Nokomai. The ceremony took place in the Anglican Church, Athol, after which the guests adjourned to the residence of the bride’s parents for breakfast. In the evening a dance for the young people was held in the Athol hall. Mr and Mrs Adams will reside at Nokomai.
