(Per United Press Association.) Timaru, February 18. The New Zealand Championship Band Contest opened this morning. _ Weather conditions were excellent with every promise of continuing. There are a large number of visitors in the town and great interest is being displayed in the competitions. Results are. EUPHONIUM SOLO. A. Ramsay (Queen Alexandra’s Own), 93 points 1 J. Smith (Nelson Garrison) .92 2 J. Mac Kay (Invercargill Civic) 88 ■ 3 E FLAT CORNET CONTEST. Lieutenant C. Webb (Queen Alexandra’s Own) 92 points 1 J. V. Carmody (Invercargill Civic) 89 points 2 W. Russell (Greymouth Municipal) 88 points 3 G. TROMBONE. B. Redmond (Kaikorai) 91 points 1 R. Waterson (Invercargill Civic) 90 points 2 S. Garvin (Timaru) 89 points 3 TROMBONE TRIO. St. Kilda Municipal (J. Marshall, R. Coughlan, R. Miller) 92 points 1 Timaru Municipal, 91 points S Port Nicholson Silver, 89 points 1 Also competed: Christchurch Municipal 88, Invercargill Civic 86, Taranaki Regimental and New Plymouth Municipal 84, Palmerston North City Silver 84. The judge complimented the performers, stating he had had an enjoyable hour. The winners gave a fine performance, but the runners-up were very close. The Hymn Test was held in the evening in the open air. The weather was beautifully fine and there was a very large attendance. Fourteen bands competed, six A Grade and eight B Grade. The result was: Timaru Municipal, “Deep Harmony,” 97 points 1 Port Nicholson Silver, “Rochdale,” 95 points 2 Greymouth Municipal, “Deep Harmony,” 94 points 3 Also competed: Queen Alexandra s Own 93; Artillery Band, Southern Command, S 3; Invercargill Civic 92; Christchurch Municipal 91; St. Kilda 91; Taranaki Regimental 90; Westport Municipal 90; Wellington Boys’ Institute 86; Gore Municipal 85; Palmerston North City Silver 85; Palmerston North Garrison 85. The judge, Mr A. Baile, said he was genuinely surprised and delighted at the standard of playing. He had never heard better hymn playing by bands. He had very little fault to find with the winning band, which gave a very expressive performance.
