THE LAKES AND SOUNDS.
To the Editor.
Sir, —I think Southland requires a real progressive: league, which will
prospect and thresh out ideas for improvement and advantage before it is too late. Sir Robert Anderson gave a strong appeal for the necessity of opening up a Southland road to the Sounds. You, Mr Editor, gave a splendid leader in the Times suggesting a plan that would link the Sounds up with Invercargill and Southland. I think it is the general opinion that the Eglinton road to the Sounds will not benefit Invercargill nor Southland. Otago and Westland will take advantage of the great tourist traffic that will come. I believe the engineers of the future will link the three Southland lakes by water, Te Anau, Manipouri and Monowai, which would give Southland an enormous amount of electrical power. A scenic road made through from Monowai to Lake Hauroko and to Invercargill would'link up two great sea ports: Bluff and Milford. I am etc. — “OLD IDENTITY.”
