Australasian Athletes in Europe. Jack Lovelock, New Zealand athlete and Oxford University mile record holder, won the 1500 metres championship at the Norwegian championships at Oslo on September 16 in 3min 47 3-10 sec. J. C. Horsfall, the Australian, won the 200 metres final. Horsfall had to be content with second place, in the 100 metres.
Gains, Aviator. Larry Gains, of Canada, the heavyweight boxer, has received an offer from Colonel Herbert Julian, of the Abyssinian Air Force. He wants to train Gains as a pilot and attempt an England to Australia record flight with the boxer as second pilot. “I am considering the matter,” said Gains to a Sporting Chronicle reporter on September 14. • ♦ * • .
Renewing Golf Balls. Blown-up golf balls are the latest innovation. The system is to pump air into the balls after they are finishedpaint and all. It is done by instruments that look like hypodermic syringes, and the marks the needles leave are almost invisible. Another innovation is the substitution of the usual core by one of pure honey. They are also using a substance like soft soap, and it is claimed that this ball can be driven further.
