EXCITEMENT AT SEA

LAUNCH THROWN INTO AIR. HARPOONED WHALE. (Per United Press! Association.) Blenheim, November 9. A whaling party in the Tory Channel harpooned a huge Right whale from the speed launch Cachelot, and the mammal sounded, coming up under the launch. The craft was thrown high in the air, starting a couple of planks, while the shock exploded a spare bomb in the launch. Joseph Perano, the leader of the party, who was operating the harpoon gun right over the bombs, was severely injured, a large part of his thigh and back muscles being torn away. The harpoon was hurriedly severed, and the launch, in a sinking condition, made full speed for the beach, which was reached in the nick of time. Perano was removed to Picton Hospital, where an operation was performed. His condition is serious, but not grave. The other occupants of the launch, it is believed, sustained minor injuries.
