OAKS DAY

VICTORIA RACING CLUB ALINURA WINS CLASSIC NIGHTLY SUCCESSFUL UPOKO ARIKI SCORES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.15 p.m.) Melbourne, Nov. 8. The weather was fine after heavy rain for the V.R.C. races at which there was a moderate attendance. Keith Voitre created a favourable impression with his handling of the Maiden Plate winner Worthing. The colt is owned by his breeder, Mr Sol Green and won in impressive style. Strathardale had a comfortable win in the Byron Moore Stakes. The New Zealander Golden Promise, suffering from shin soreness, did well to secure second. The winner is raced by the V.R.C. Chairman, Mr L. K. S. MacKinnon. He has had two wins and two thirds in four starts.

Nightly led always in the C. B. Fisher Plate arid was not extended. The time was 22 J seconds outside the race record. Hall Mark made no impression in the final stages. Villius was prominent always and beat the fast-finishing New Zealandbred Bunsby Gaze in the Carnival Handicap. Allenby was unlucky, his rider losing his irons a furlong from home. Heywood, the trainer and F. E. Cobbold, owner of Villius, were associated with Danielo’s success in the Carnival Handicap last year. Alinura, owned and trained in South Australia, improved on her Wakeful Stakes form to register a comfortable win in the Oaks. She won the recent South Australia Derby. Quarto and Daughter of the Wind ran game races. Queen Helen and Limyris were below expectations. Upoko Ariki beat the pacemaker, Burlesque, narrowly in the Veteran Stakes. Gippsland finished fast for third. Melisande was never dangerous. The results were:— MAIDEN PLATE, £3OO. One mile. S. Green’s br c Worthing, by Verbius—Barryanda, 3yrs, 8.0 (K. Voitre) 1 P. G. At the annual meeting of the Southland Ladies’ Cricket Association there was a good attendance, and Mr J. A. Doig presided. The annual report stated: —The association is in an excellent financial position, the cash balance being £ll 4/3. During the season a dance and various competitions were held, the association’s finances benefiting by a considerable sum. For a first season’s effort this must be regarded as highly satisfactory. Three clubs entered teams in the association’s competition, some keen play resulting between Union and Collegiate clubs, while Woolworths, for a first year team, made an excellent showing. Only one representative fixture was played, this being against Otago at Dunedin, at Easter, the Southland eleven being successful. The following office-bearers were elected: Patron, Mr J. W. Anderson (re-elected); president, Mr J. A. Doig (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mr A. Walker, Mrs Poole, Mr T. Marshall, Mrs Storrie and Mrs J. A. Doig; secretary, Miss Alys Stewart; treasurer, Mr J. At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council to-night, Wanganui submitted a remit for further negotiations .with Australia and support for

the benefit of such tours to cricket in New Zealand. It was argued and also maintained that the New Zealand Council should try to obtain an Australian State team. Mr A. Donnelly said that negotiations with the Australian Board of Control for a team this season were continuing, but the visit was unlikely. The latest reply from the Board of Control states that the time had arrived when, in the interests of Australian cricket, it was necessary to concentrate on home games. It was necessary to arouse Public interest in the Sheffield Shield games which would be less attractive if the best players were away on tour. Consequently a team could not very well leave before the end of. February and even then would interfere with the clubs’ matches. The Board also stated that under the international rules, New Zealand had no authority to negotiate with the State Associations, or with the Melbourne Cricket Club. Mr Donnelly added that the Council was still trying to induce the Board to change their decision. As for suggesting sending a personal representative it had to be remembered that the Council had maintained contact and had a good representative already in Australia, and was still in communication. The Wanganui motion would not help. When put to the vote the motion was lost.
