SEVERE TEST
NEW TYPE OF PLANE COMETS IN CENTENARY AIR RACE EXPERTS IMPRESSED (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, November 3. The performance of O. CathcartJones and K. Waller in the de Haviland Comet plane is all the more remarkable because Cathcart-Jones took the place at the last minute of Bernard Rubin, the owner of the plane, who was prevented by serious illness from flying in the race to Melbourne. Cathcart-Jones had practically no previous experience of the Comet machine which had been designed by De Haviland’s under some pressure of time and was in fact flown by all the pilots “straight off the drawing board.” None of the crews of the three Comets received their machines long enough before the event tc allow a reasonable amount of practice. Expert opinion in these circumstances estimated the odds at three to one against any of the Comets reaching Melbourne; consequently air circles are greatly impressed at the success with which the new type passed so severe a test.
