POWER RATES

SATISFACTORY POSITION REVENUE ESTIMATES EXCEEDED LEVY MAY BE REDUCED A healthy state of affairs in regard to rates collected was disclosed by the secretary (Mr Charles Campbell) in his report to the Southland Electric Power Board at the monthly meeting yesterday. “It was estimated that some £6732 would be received by way of payment of arrears of rates and that of the current year’s rates, £29,400, would be paid by March 31,” said Mr Campbell.' “Both estimates were exceeded, the actual receipts being £14,970 and £33,041 respectively. The amount paid in respect of the current year’s rates is equivalent to 76 per cent, of the total rate levied.” The chairman (Mr W. Hinchey): The position is a very satisfactory one indeed. We are pleased the way the rates have come in, and we appreciate the way the people of Southland have responded. As a result we hope to be able to make a reduction in rates for the coming year.

Members: Hear, hear. Mr W. McChesney: I hope the Press gives full publicity to the chairman’s remarks. The position certainly is very satisfactory.
