YACHTING
(By
“Spinnaker.”)
Once again the Invercargill Boating Club was favoured with a fine day for its Labour Day picnic at Sandy Point. Launches took the people down leaving the wharf at nine o’clock. Practically every launch on the estuary was present and a most enjoyable day was spent. During the afternoon sports were held, the following being the winners of the various events:—
50 yards, boys under 12: H. Wilson 1, H. Bennie 2. 100 yards, boys under 16: R. Hodge 1, R. Ferguson 2. 75 yards married ladies: Mrs Broad 1, Mrs J. Colbran 2. 100 yards yachtsmen’s handicap: J. Hatch 1, R. Tinnock 2, F. Biggs 3. Ladies’' rowing race: Misses S. Gough and A. Mathieson 1, Mrs J. Colbran 2. Men’s rowing race: J. Hast-
ings 1, G. Dickson 2. Men’s sculling race: J. Hatch 1, H. Gough 2, A. Tinnock 3. Messrs W. Johnston and M. Blair have almost finished their new auxiliary yacht Southern Light. She is 37ft 6in. overall and will be powered with a 15-16 horsepower sleeve-valve Kelvin engine. She is to be ketch rigged with a sail area of approximately five hundred square feet. Below, accommodation is provided for six persons and everything has been done to make her as comfortable as possible. Mr T. Ballantyne has in his shed set up a small auxilary yacht similar to Mr J. Nelson’s Una, but having six inches more beam. He intends installing a small motor and having a moderate rig. Mr A. S. Wilson’s Te Moana returned from Bluff on Sunday afternoon. She has been engaged in fishing all the winter and has returned to Invercargill for overhaul and painting. The first race of the season is to be held this afternoon. Before the race the fitting out prize will be judged. This promises to be a very difficult task for the judges, because all the crews have their boats in tip-top condition. Weather permitting the race will be down to the black buoy off the mouth of the New River and back.
