CRUISER STRUCK
COLLISION IN FOG AMERICAN SHIP BADLY DAMAGED LOSS OF LIFE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.25 p.m.) San Francisco, October 24. The cruiser Chicago, a new United States ship, was badly damaged when she collided with the British freighter Silver Palm, in a fog off Point Hur today. The chief pay clerk of the Chicago, John Troy, and Lieutenant H. A. Macfarlane were killed and Lieutenant F. S. Chappelle died. A machinist, Joseph Ohlers, was seriously hurt. A great hole was torn in the port side of the Chicago when the bow of the Silver Palm struck forward of number one turret, penetrated the armour plate and bored in almost amidships. The Chicago’s forward compartment below water filled. Both ships proceeded towards San Francisco. Lacking details naval officers here said the ships apparently met when travelling at a high speed.
