FINAL GAME

SOUTHLAND TEAM MATCH WITH HAWKES BAY FURTHER CASUALTIES (From Our Special Reporter.) Hastings, August 29. The Southland Rugby team arrived here yesterday evening and ran into the first rain of the tour. Torrential rain fell shortly after the team left Masterton and continued heavily until this morning. The weather has now cleared but is still dull, and it is anticipated that a heavy ground will be in evidence for the final game of the tour against Hawkes Bay at Hastings on Thursday. More casualties in the Wairarapa match has reduced the strength of the team still further, and although the forwards for Thursday’s game will be at full strength, the backs again will be slightly weakened. Neither Porter nor Sutherland, the full-backs, will be available, and the selector has decided to try Calder out in this important position and leave Grant in the threequarter line. After Saturday’s experience with Grant at centre, it was thought that Mitchell might have been reinstated in his usual position of centre, but the selector has decreed otherwise and Mitchell will again be played on the wing and Grant at centre with Smith and Sharp the fiveeighths. The only alteration in the forwards is the substitution of Southern by Murphy who thus gets his first game on the tour. Pawson, who has completely recovered from his .Wellington injury, comes back into the pack, taking Fowle’s place. Murphy and Pawson will give dash and pace to the vanguard. In addition to his shoulder injury, Sutherland got a bad knock on the eye. He is recovering slowly. After a practice run to-day the team to meet Hawkes Bay was announced as follows: Full-back —Calder. Three-quarters—Mitchell, Grant, Frampton. Five-eighths—Sharp, Smith. Half-back—Thomas. Forwards—Donnelly, Mattingly, L. George, Purdue, Galt, Murphy, Pawson, Berry. Emergencies—Bruce, Southern, C. George.
