PENNY FARES
CORPORATION TRAMS REVERSION TO OLD RATE PROPOSED CR. JONES URGES FURTHER TRIAL A report from the city electrical engineer on the tramway traffic returns since the introduction of the penny tram fares on June 20 until August 28 as compared with the corresponding period last year (when twopenny fares obtained) was before the City Council last evening. The revenue under penny fares was £3048 5/3 and for the 1932 period £3506 11/5; and the passengers carried totalled 520,498 and 469,390 respectively. In the Trading Committee’s report appeared the following clause: “With reference to the city electrical engineer’s report to be submitted to the next meeting of the council regarding the results of a three months’ trial of Id fares, recommend that the city electrical engineer be authorized to arrange for the reversion to the previous fares on the expiration of the three months’ trial with the exception that ordinary cash fares be charged for Sunday travelling instead of the minimum 3d per section.” After the adoption of the clause had been moved and' seconded, Councillor A. W. Jones moved as an amendment that the clause be referred back to the committee.
“The Trading Committee is arranging for a funeral without having a corpse,” declared councillor Jones. “I am moving that amendment and I give notice of motion that I will move at next meeting of the council that a further three months' trial of one penny fares be given. I have some illuminating figures here to show councillors how the position has been improving in recent weeks.”
Councillor Jones’s figures were, unfortunately, given to the council sitting in committee. The hour was 11.5 p.m. and the Mayor- and some of the councillors desired to smoke—which is permitted only in committee. The discussion lasted until 11.25 p.m. The clause was referred back to the committee.
Before the council adjourned Councillor Jones gave formal notice of his motion that a further three months’ trial of penny fares be given.
