RADIO SETS
“ASSEMBLING UNECONOMIC.” TARIFF COMMISSION EVIDENCE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, August 29. The elimination of the existing duty of 10 per cent, on British and Australian radio sets and the reduction of duty on foreign from 42 to 20 per cent, was asked by Mr W. J. Truscott, director of Spedding, Ltd., in evidence before the Tariff Commission. He contended that the assembling industry in New Zealand was uneconomic. The present landing charges on imported sets exceeded 100 per cent. He asserted that assembling was a blind alley occupation for youths who were paid less than Australians doing the same work. He agreed with Professor Murphy that a reasonable revenue duty would be appropriate and there should be an excise duty of 20 per cent. Witness also asked for the abolition of the duty of 65 per cent, on British refrigerators and a reduction of duty on foreign from 140 to 20 per cent. _ The Auckland sitting of the commission will end to-morrow or Thursday' and the members will leave for the south on Friday.
