TENNIS IN AMERICA

DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP. VINES AND GLEDHILL DEFEATED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) New York, August 28. The semi-finals of the National doubles tennis championship were commenced, one being postponed owing to the light. Results: Shields and Parker defeated Vines and Gledhill, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2. Lott and Stoeffen v. Quist and Turnbull, 6-4, 1-2 (postponed). The latter match commenced under lowering skies. The Australians led 3-1, but their opponents drew level and then went ahead to 5-3. The Americans played brilliantly at the net and kept the Australians lobbing defensively on the back line. They were at set point on Turnbull’s service in the ninth game, but the Australians rallied and took the game. They were within, a point of breaking through Stoeffen’s service in the tenth to even the score, but the Americans tvere not to be denied and won the game and the set. After three games in the second set the light became so bad that it was decided to postpone the match until to-morrow as it had grown quite dark and rain seemed imminent. MIXED DOUBLES SEMI-FINAL POSTPONED. (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Chestnut Hills, Aug. 28. In the semi-final of the mixed doubles championship between Miss Elizabeth Ryan and Vines and Miss Dorothy Round and Perry the scores were 6-2, 1-2 when the match was postponed owing to rain.
