The Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor ship Port Fremantle arrived at Wellington on Thursday from New York and Savannah, via Auckland. During the voyage from Savannah to Panama the vessel crossed the edge of a hurricane and experienced stormy weather for 24 hours, the conditions necessitating her being hove to for a short period. In the Pacific the weather generally was good until the vessel was nearing New Zealand after which a boisterous north-east wind and frequent heavy rain saualls were experienced. The motor cargo tonnage under construction at the present time is, according to the July number of the Motor Ship, 75 pet cent, more than it ras a year ago. Steamer tonnage has also increased, but this represents only a small proportion of the total. The imnrovement since the commencement of the year has been considerable, for on January 1 the motor cargo ships being built were of about 100,000 tons gross, whereas the figure is now 325,000 tons gross. It should be added that this tonnage is very small compared with the amount of construction in normal times, but the increase during the last Iz. months is a hopeful sign for the future, especially as the world mercantile fleet is rapidly diminishing, on account of the large number of ships being scrapped. It is estimated that at the end of 1933 the world tonnage will be 1,500,000 tons gross less than it was at the beginning of the year. The Port Hardy, which has been discharging London cargo at Australian ports, will come to New Zealand to load and is due at Lyttelton to-day. The Wairuna reached Suva on August 19 from Auckland. At Fiji the vessel was to load sugar for Vancouver. Afterwards the Wairuna will load at Pacific coast ports early in October for -Auckland Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin,, Melbourne and Sydney, She will return to Auckland about November 2. ■ ■ The American steamer Golden, Rod Was despatched from Los Angeles 6n August 15 with cargo from Pacific coast ports for Auckland and Australia. She Is due at .Auckland on September 10.

She is due at Auckland on September 8. A total of 417 vessels, including 16 British overseas merchant vessels, of 321,975 gross tons and 190,936 net tons, arrived at Auckland ‘ during July. Compared with the corresponding period last year, overseas merchant shipping showed a decrease of two vessels, and intercolonial shipping a decrease of five. A summary of the large merchant shipping showed a decrease of eight vessels, of 36,451 gross tons and 24,646 net tons.
