PULLOVER FOR SIX-YEAR-OLD BOY. Material required: Five ounces of 4ply wool, No. 9 and No. 13 needles. Begin at the lower edge of the back and cast on 90 stitches. With No. 13 needles, rib 2 plain, 2 purl, for three inches. Change to larger needles and work in this simple pattern:— Ist row: * Knit 1, purl 1, repeat from ♦ to the end of the row. 2nd row: Purl all the way back. Repeat the last two rows throughout the jumper. Knit until the work measures ten inches from the beginning. Shape the armholes by casting off four stitches at the beginning of the next two rows and decreasing one stitch at each end of needle in every other row four times. Knit until the armholes measure 51 inches. Shape the shoulders by casting off four stitches at the beginning of every row until there are 28 stitches left in the centre at the back of the neck. Cast off. The front is made in exactly the same way as the back to within one inch of the armhole. Divide the stitches in halves here and decrease one stitch at the neck edge in every fourth row for one inch. Shape the armhole just as you did the back. Keep on decreasing at the neck edge in every fourth row until the shoulder is the same width as the shoulder at the back. Knit until the armhole measures 5j inches. sleeve is long enough at the underarm seam. Knit 2 together at each end of needle in every row until there are 14 stitches left. Cast off. Press and make up. With the right side of the neck towards you, pick up all the stitches round the V neck and rib 1 plain, 1 purl, always knitting 2 together at each side of the V neck in every row. Cast off loosely.
