DRUNKEN MOTORISTS
NO MORE LENIENCY. FINAL WARNING BY MAGISTRATE. “Time and again I have issued warnings in these cases,” the Magistrate, Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., said at the conclusion of a case in the Police Court yesterday morning, when a man had appeared on a charge of being found drunk in charge of a car. “In future I will enforce what is in my opinion the only remedy for this evil: that is, imprisonment without the option. Each case is proving more and more the mistakenness of leniency in these cases. I think that now I may issue a general warning. No matter under what circumstances, if people choose to take liquor and then drive their cars in a state of intoxication, there will be no option of a fine. I intend to impose a term of imprisonment.” His Worship added that only the fact that the man in the present case was the father of five children had prevented him from imposing imprisonment; he had issued many warnings m the past, and it was necessary that the users of the road should be protected.
