SCHOOL BREAK-UP. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual break-up and prize-giv-ing ceremony of the local school took place on Friday afternoon on the school lawn before a record attendance of parents and friends of the pupils. The function opened with four races, prizes for which were donated by Mrs Stewart The winners were: Senior Girls’ Race.—Margaret Swann. Junior Girls.— Yvonne Anderson. Senior Boys.—Roy Slaughter, Junior Boys.—Fred Batt. Four items followed—a folk dance by the school, two songs by the senior room, and a folk dance by, the junior

room. The prizes were presented by the Rev. Mr Hodson, who gave the children a short address on “Successful Failures.” Mr Stewart expressed his pleasure at seeing so many parents present and announced that special prizes had been given by Mr A. Moore and by the local branch of the Farmers’ Union for agriculture. After the prizegiving, a presentation of a flower vase was made to the school by Miss Mollie Smith on behalf of the Standard VI and VII pupils leaving this year. Miss Leila Slaughter accepted the gift on behalf of the school. At the end of the function, a lollie scramble was held on the lawn, with a tin of sweets presented by Mr G.
