THE CHURCH

NEWS AND NOTES. FROM PULPIT AND PEW. “The world can never understand a Christianity that keeps aloof from the sorrow and the suffering of the poor.” —R. F. Horton. "Faith in Christ, in the highest and the purest, is the conviction that the highest we are made capable of seeing is enshrined at the heart of things.”— R. J. Campbell. The service at the Esk Street Baptist Church on the Lord’s Day evening will be conducted as the tent mission service at Hastings. There will be . a bright song service and everybody will be welcomed. The Rev. J. Grocott, travelling secretary for the Methodist Young Men’s Bible Class movement, is at present visiting the classes of Southland and will occupy the pulpit of the Central Methodist Church, Leet street, on Sunday evening. Pastor Bryan will conduct the morning service. St. Peter’s Methodist School anniversary will be celebrated by three special services to-morrow. A large children’s choir of some 200 voices under the baton of Mr J. Hensley will render inspiring music. This year’s anniversary promises to be bigger and brighter than previous celebrations. Meetings will be held in the Salvation Army Citadel on Sunday, at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. We especially invite the non-church goers. The Salvation Army is the people’s church, and we preach only Him Who drew publicans and sinners unto Himself. Try and come on Sunday. In the love of life, there comes solitude. Seek not solitude in self-exalt-ation, disparaging others, neither in doubt nor in fear; but seek it in tranquillity and in certainty, not to escape but to fulfil. Out of the fulness of thine heart comes the joy of solitude.— Mr J. Krishnamurti. The North Baptist Sunday School will hold its anniversary to-morrow. Special singing by the scholars will be a feature of the services. In the morning the Rev. Peam, of the Elies road Methodist Church, will be the preacher. At the afternoon service Mr H. Schroeder will be the speaker and Pastor L. P. Bryan will conduct the evening service.. The broadcast to-morrow evening will be from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. For the past four Sunday evenings the minister, the Rev. C. J. Tocker, has been preaching a series of “Stewart Island Sermons.” The series will be continued to-morrow evening when the subject will be “Seasorrow.” The choir will sing the anthem “Across the bar.” The last Sunday of October is observed as Reformation Sunday throughout a great part of the world. At First Church the special themes will be: At 11 a.m., “What if we neglect our religion?” At 6.30 p.m., What was the Reformation? For the last 400 years Christian religious expression has been tempered by two great principles which represent the biggest movement in world history and are vital to-day. The two principles bom in the Reformation were; Freedom of private moral judgment; and (2) subjection to a visible authority in all things. These principles still are in healthy opposition; but interact for the betterment of the individual and society, stirring the nations and people to-day. They are the biggest forces in our European civilization upon which our social structure is built. Thoughtful and intelligent people should find a study of these principles at the present time, of vital importance not only to a clearer understanding of Christian expression, but to the welfare of themselves and society in general. There is another value a reflection upon these matters will yield; it will link them with the thought of the greater world without.
