GOKE Mrs J. E. Rogers has returned from Wellington. Mrs T. C. Hamilton spent a few days last week at Invercargill, where she was the guest of Mr and Miss Hamilton, Don Street. Miss Linda Cooper (Invercargill) was the guest of Mrs H. H. Brown, Huron street, East Gore. Mrs A. Gormack (Invercargill) was the guest of her daughter, Mrs C. McLeod, Elizabeth street, for the races. Mrs T. Varcoe, Lumsden, is at present the guest of her daughter, Mrs C. Cross, Otama. _Mr and Mrs W. A. Stewart, Limehills, have been spending a few days with Mr and Mrs W. Wilson, Eccles street. Mrs Harolds, Timaru, is at present staying with her sister, Mrs W. D. Shelton, Albany street. Miss E. Alexander, Bluff, spent the week-end with her parents, Coutt’s Road. Mr and Mrs J. H. McLean, Roxburgh, and formerly of Gore, were visitors here last week. Miss K. Cronin is at present spending a holiday in Christchurch. Miss M. Jopp, Invercargill, was the guest of Mrs E. A. Pigeon, Crombie street, during the week. Mr John Norrie, Lawrence, spent the week-end as the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Fisher, Devon street. Guests at the Carrington during the week included Mr and Mrs Dodds (Timaru) Mr and Mrs A. Russell (Dunedin), Greenslade (2) (Dunedin), Mr Lewis (Timaru), Miss Murdoch (Dunedin), Mr Hastie (Dunedin), Mr Wood (Dunedin). The lounge of the Women’s Club was beautifully decorated with pink rhododendrons and cherry blossom for the final evening of the Music Circle which was held on Wednesday of last week. Mrs J. A. Edwards, chairwoman, presided over a good attendance of members and gentlemen friends. The programme, which was mainly operatic, was most enjoyable, an interesting introduction being given by Mr W. B: Johnston on the origin and history of operatic music. The following contributed items: Misses M. Johnston and O. Steans, pianoforte duet—ballet music No. 1 from Rosamunde (Schubert); Miss V. Inder, solo—“ Flower Song” from Faust”; Mesdames J. A. Blaikie and J. Hunter, pianoforte duet —Selections from “Martha” (Flotow); Mr H. H. Brown, solo, “Oh Star of Eve” (Tannhauser); Miss M. Inder, solo, “Here’s to Love” (Rubens); Mrs H. H. Brown and Miss M. Johnston, pianoforte duet—overture from “Midsummer Night’s Dream”—Mendelssohn); Mr D. Pringle, solo, “Yeomen of England” (Edward German); Miss M. Jopp, solo, “Sappho’s Farewell” (Gounod); Miss Johnston, pianoforte solo—“ Hymn to the Sun” from “Le Coq D’or”; Mr L. Stevens, solo—“ The English Rose” (Edward German); Mrs Brown, pianoforte solo—quartette from Rigoletto; Mr W. B. Johnston, solo—- “ When all was Young” (Gounod). Most disappointing weather was experienced for the opening day of the Gore Racing Club’s Snring meeting on Saturday and consequently the new spring hats and costrimes which are usually a feature of this meeting could not be displayed. Rogers, M. Crawford (Invercargill), Nicol (2). Wednesday afternoon last was beautifully fine for the official opening of the Gore Croquet Club. The Club president, Mrs R. W. McCreath, welcomed the large number of members and friends who were present and expressed the wish that the 1932-33 season would prove a successful and happy one. Apologies were received from Mesdames D. Dewar, G. C. Hamilton and H. R. Robertson and a telegram of congratulations and best wishes for a pleasant season from Mrs I. I. McGregor of Masterton, a former member of the club. The greens were officially declared open by the Mayor, Mr A. T. Newman, and the first ball played by Miss Newman. After a delightful afternoon tea had been served by members of the committee the afternoon was spent in various competitions which resulted as follows: Break, Mr R. W. McCreath; golf, Mrs H. Smith (Invercargill); scallywag, Mr R. P. Neale; putting, Mrs Todd; pegging, Mrs R. J. Telfer. Amongst the many present were Mr and Mrs A„ H. Aitken, Mr and Mrs R. W. McCreath, Mr and Mrs J.
