WINTON’S EFFORT
INDUSTRIES WEEK EXHIBITION. A PROGRESSIVE POLICY. (From Our Correspondent.) At Winton next week an Industries Week Exhibition is scheduled to take place over four days. The exhibition was mooted by the Winton Commercial Association some months ago, and with a progressive policy the association’s members entered wholeheartedly into the “working up” of such a project and carrying it through to a successful issue. The amount of work that would have to be devoted to an exhibition of such a kind was well known by members, but they set to with enthusiasm and now practically every detail has been completed. The foundation work of such a project entails no end of time, but the solid committee that has been formed and carried the arrangements so far successfully has made light of its task. The principal feature of the exhibition will be the display of articles principally of New Zealand manufacture. Wholesalers have not been backward in assisting the project and although it was thought that there would be difficulty in' obtaining the support of 30 manufacturers it is now ascertained that displays of over 40 wholesalers will be present over the four days. These will include wares of all descriptions and will no doubt be responsible for a formidable as well as highly interesting array. This exhibition will take place in the Drill Hall, which has been carefully spaced out, and allotments have been made to the various manufacturers. In a number of instances the manufacture and processes through which individual articles go will be explained to spectators, while special children’s sessions have also been arranged. The retailers of the town are all interested and when financial assistance was asked of them to carry the function through its initial stages, only in one or two instances was it refused. The enlisting of such whole-hearted support speaks volumes for the class of business men the township of Winton possesses, and although it is widely recognized that Winton is one of the most solid boroughs in the province, such a fact is still further emphasized. Excellent public support has also been given, and a strong ladies’ committee has charge of the children’s events, parades and dance, while a sports committee has been set up and a first class sports programme will be provided. This latter function will set the ball rolling.
Apart from the sports programme, numerous children’s items have been arranged, such as fancy dress parades, bun-eating competitions, etc. For the old timers a ball has been arranged, also a similar function for the young people, while not only will a number of the business houses be artistically decorated, for the occasion, but competitions in a number of the business premises are also to take place. . A further general meeting in connecuontion with tiie project was held on t evening when the president ?£ “J® Winton Commercial Association, Mr T. Walker, presided over an attendance of 50. Mr Walker mentioned the splendid response that had been received from wholesalers and said that over 40 displays would be exhibited.. A number of displays had already arrived and the work of erecting them would be undertaken almost immediately. Several district schools advised that, pupils would be attending the special children’s sessions.
