DRAMATIC ARREST

CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARIES. CONTRACTOR CHARGED WITH THEFT. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, October 11. A man suspected of robbing Coates’ jewellery shop on Saturday night was arrested under dramatic circumstances last evening. As the result of. investigations a number of police waited near a certain house in Kilmore street and when the suspected man appeared a revolver shot was fired as a signal by the leader of the police squad. The police then closed in on the man and chased him, it is alleged, through a yard where he ran into the arms of detectives who were waiting at the other entrance. Another man also present was likewise arrested. As a sequel to his arrest Gordon Webb Hazeldine, aged 23, a contractor, of Sydenham, was charged this morning with breaking and entering the premises of G. Coates and Co., Ltd., and committing theft. He was remanded till October 20.
