MATAURA NEWS

LODGE MEETING.

(From Our Correspondent.)

The ordinary and quarterly summoned meeting of the Mataura Oddfellows Lodge 1.0.0. F. No. 40 was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday night there, being a large attendance. The principal business of the evening was the initiation of a candidate, the ceremony being conducted in an impressive manner by the Noble Grand and his officers. Following this portion of the business D.G.M. Bro. N. McLeod was received to conduct the ceremony of installation of officers for the ensuing term, those installed being as follows:— Noble grand P.G. Bro. L. McPhee, Vice-Grand Bro. L. Shrimpton; treasurer, P.G. Bro W. T. Richmond, general secretary P.G. Bro E. Calder, together with the minor offices.

At the annual meeting of the congregation of the Tuturau Presbyterian Church held on Friday evening in the Public Hall the various reports of the congregation’s activities were received and adopted. During the evening the choir from the Mataura Presbyterian Church rendered the cantata “Daniel” with much effect and were heartily thanked for their performance. An address was delivered by the Rev. N. Sansom, Home missionary from Brydone.

The official opening of the Mataura Cricket Club was held at the Recreation grounds on Saturday afternoon, a good crowd of members and supporters being present. In spite of the inclement weather in the morning the afternoon was, beautifully fine. Prior to the commencement of nlay the season was officially opened by the president.

In his opening address Mr Clark

commented on the growth of the club and the keen interest being shown by the young members, and it behoved them to practice assiduously to raise the standard of. country cricket and so help maintain the high standard set by our New Zealand representatives abroad. In formally declaring the season open he wished the club every success and trusted that the season would be pleasant and successful. A most enjoyable game was then played between the President’s and Vice-President’s team, the result being a draw.
