COSTER FAIR
ARRANGEMENTS IN HAND. The weekly meeting of the executive of the Great Southern Coster Fair, to be held in the Victoria Hall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 29 and 30 and July 1, was held on Monday afternoon. Those present were: Mrs H. W. Royds (president of the Plunket Society), Mesdames D. Cuthbertson, R. M. Strang, W. D. Palmer and Messrs D. Cuthbertson, H.' P. Weston, J. Gilkison, T. S. Tomlinson, J. B. Reid, J. Robertson, Major McHugh and Miss Hackworth (secretary). The arrangements for the fair, which is the first of its kind to be held in Southland, are well in hand. The stallholders are receiving a gratifying response to their request for antiques and other useful articles for sale at the fair. These are displayed in a shop in Newburgh’s Buildings, lent by Mr T. Newburgh for the purpose. This shop is open to receive goods on Mondays to Fridays from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. There will be an entertainment each evening, including a tug-of-war to be arranged by the Rugby Union The commercial travellers have consented to help with a coster procession through the streets. There will be a coster supper of “hot dogs” and Mr R. Dixon, oyster opening champion, will be in attendance. The grand finale will be a Coster Ball to be held in Smith’s Hall on Saturday, July 2, at 8 p.m. when all the “Harrys” and “Harriets” will drop dull care until midnight. Tickets for the Ball are on sale at the secretary’s office, Newburghs Buildings. A single ticket, which includes a coster supper, costs 4/-. There will be bridge for non-dancers in the Women’s Club rooms. The Footwarmers’ Band has offered its services free. Mr J. Holloway has consented to take charge of the sideshows.
