The Occidental gold mine at Cobar is reopening after being idle for ten years. Six hundred men will be engaged. GENERAL STORE BURNED. Sydney, May 31. The residents of Byran Bay were called from their beds last night to assist in extinguishing a fire which threatened the main business section of the town. The flames were confined to Gibson’s general store, which was gutted. The damage is estimated at £lO,OOO. MR NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN PROGRESSING. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 30. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Neville Chamberlain, who has been suffering from an attack of gout, benefited greatly from treatment and is making excellent progress. PROFESSOR PICCARD’S PLANS. London, May 30. The Brussels correspondent of The Times states that Professor Piccard makes his second ascent to the stratosphere at Zurich in June and if successful goes to the Hudson Bay region for his third ascent to study the Aurora cosmic ray. Professor Aguste Piccard and Herr Kiper ascended from Augsburg on May 27 last year in a hermetically sealed cylinder attached to a huge balloon. After seventeen hours in the air they reached a height of nearly ten miles. They landed safely on a glacier in the Oetz Alps on the Austro-Italian frontier, having gained valuable knowledge regarding the upper air. HOTEL AND SHOPS BURNED. Brisbane, May 31. A disastrous fire at Cunnamulla destroyed Tattersall’s Hotel and nine shops. The Shire Hall and Post Office on the other side of the road caught alight, but the flames were quickly extinguished. The damage runs into many thousands of pounds.
