BOXING

CARNERA DEFEATS COOK. AUSTRALIAN KNOCKED OUT. (United Press Assn.—Dy Telegraph—Copyright.) London, March 23. Primo Camera (Italy) knocked out George Cook (Australia) in the fourth round. Following upon the Boxing Board s refusal to sanction the bout without a referee the promoters agreed that the board should appoint the referee whose name was pot disclosed till the boxers entered the ring. Eight thousand were present at the Albert Hall for the fight.. Sporting writers eulogized Cook's pluck in meeting the gigantic Italian, who scaled 17st 61b to his opponent’s 13st 51b. The referee was Mr G. H. Douglas, who is a brother of the late cricketer. Camera wore Boz gloves. The Australian pluckily attacked the Italian from the start, but was downed for three seconds with a short left to the neck. The crowd heartily applauded Cook’s vigorous retaliation. The second round was even, neither landing clean blows, but a right to the body downed Cook in the third for six, the bell saving him. The round was easily the Italian’s, only quick footwork saving the Australian from heavier punishment He was badly rattled and often driven to the ropes. In the fourth Cook had just risen groggily after being down for nine when a right cross to the jaw sent him sprawling. He did not attempt to rise. The crowd accepted the inevitable. The verdict was accepted quietly, though there were some shouts from the gallery: “It is a public disgrace.” Camera was full of praise for Cook. He said to his manager: “Get me Cook as a sparring partner for my next fight. He stands up.”
