THEFT OF £lll4. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 24. James William Harbord had nothing to say further than admitting the charge when he appeared in the Petone Court to answer to a charge of theft of sums totalling £lll4, the "property of the Upper Hutt Borough Council by whom he was employed as Town Clerk. In the course of his evidence a detective said that, according to the accused, about £6OO had gone into a butchery business at Upper Hutt. He understood that that was recoverable. The rest had been spent on private debts and only 12/6 was left. Accused had gone out of his way to assist in straightening affairs since his arrest. Accused was committed for sentence.
