Mr G. E. Currie, stipendary steward to the New Zealand Racing Conference for the South Island, arrived in Invercargill by last evening’s express.

Mr A. R. Elley, of the Union Bank, Christchurch,* and at one time on the local staff, has been paying a flying visit to Invercargill. He will leave for Dunedin by the second express to-day.

Misses Maxie Mathieson, R. Anderson, J. Eggers and J. Munro, and Messrs W. Jarvis, S. Jarvis, T. Pullar and G. Newall, of Dunedin, arrived yesterday to take part in the Oreti Surf Club’s swimming carnival on Monday evening.

The Rev. James R. Young, vicar of Christ Church, Wanganui, has been appointed by the Bishop of’ Wellington to be Archdeacon of Waitotara. Archdeacon Young is well known in Christchurch and on the West Coast. On his return from the war, during which he acted as chaplain to the New Zealand Artillery, he was appointed vicar of St. Chad’s, Linwood, and later served for four years as vicar of Ross and South Westland, transferring thence to Hawera.

The death occurred in Invercargill on Thursday of Mrs W. H. Uttley, mother of Dr G. H. Uttley, rector of the Southland Boys’ High School. The late Mrs Uttley was born in Farnham, Surrey, England, 81 years ago and came to New Zealand in 1872 by the ship May Queen. For many years sfip lived in Dunedin, coming to Invercargill several years ago to live -with her only daughter, Mrs J. F. Strang, Yarrow street. Besides Mrs Strang and Dr Uttley, Mrs Uttley is survived by two sons, Mr W. M. Uttley, of the staff of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, and Mr F. 11. Uttley, of Wanganui.

The London Alpine Club has conferred life membership on Mr A. P. Harper, of Wellington, in recognition of his services to mountaineering. Mr Harper, whose experience in alpine climbing extends over 45 years, has been a member of the London Alpine Club since 1892. He began climbing in Switzerland in 1887, and in 1889 he returned to New* Zealand. During the two following years he led parties over the little known Tasman area, and in 1892 he joined other members of the London Alpine Club in guideless work at Zermatt, Switzerland. From 1893 to 1896 Mr Harper carried out exploration work on the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, New Zealand, and his subsequent work has kept him almost continuously in the forefront of mountaineering in the Dominion.
